Barzero is great, but as a diving club we have one minor disadvantage: we're about as far from the sea as it's possible to get in the UK. To that end we've set out in search of inland diving opportunities a little nearer home.

There's Stoney cove and Guildenburgh (two muddy puddles) - but still a lengthy drive. Nearer home there's Arlesey pit - a 12metre deep quantity of liquid mud that's used for sailing and dumping miscellaneous body parts. This is within our catchment area, although you'll have to be at the water's edge by 7am! OK, so you'll be back in time for a breakfast fry-up, but we'd rather find somewhere that allows you to have a lie-in first.

Arthur suggested (somewhat in jest) that we should try diving the mill pool in Langford. This has turned out to be a good little site - and it was Joe who suggested that Jordan's Mill, near Biggleswade might also be worth a go. So it was, on 8th May 2011 that certain intrepid (and decrepit) explorers jumped into the murkey waters. John and Joe got wet, while Arthur, Jose, Deb and Kriszta watched. We had an interesting tour of the mill from our host - a unique insight into a bygone age of british industrial supremacy.

Once on site the fog was starting to clear and we could just see part of the wreck sticking out of the water, so we rapidly got kitted up (no faffing this time). The SS Vera is more broken up than the SS Rosalie, but still worth a dive. The visibility was good, we managed an hours dive and the water temprature was a 11 glorious degrees C. Well worth another visit in a few weeks time.

- John Reynolds

As last week's dive on the SS Rosalie was great... and the wind for this weekend was still just about favourable... we decided to give it another go, and this time we brought our underwater cameras. Would we tempt bad visibility with this idea we thought as we drove to the dive site.

This time we dived on neap tides and slack water was predicted for 11:30. When we arrived on site there were plenty of divers from other clubs, this gave us encouragement that we had got the weather and tides correct, after a chat with the other clubs and the obligatory kit faff we decided to get in. The visibility was still excellent and there was virtually no current, we had an 80 minute dive. A nice lunch in the local cafe, an excellent day's diving, and we made it home in time for the local firework display.

We will be keeping an eye on this dive site and, if the conditions are favourable, will be planning further trips in future. If anyone is interested then contact John.

A few of us were blown out at the south coast attempting to dive the Kyarra last weekend. So at the last minute we decided to try the East coast instead: at the very least a BBQ on the beach under an umbrella we thought.

We took our diving stuff just in case, but didn't take the underwater cameras as we weren't expecting much especially from a shore dive. So after a two-hour leisurely drive we arrived in Weybourne. To our surprise the sea was flat calm; whilst kitting up a seal popped his head up to see what was going on, then disappeared.

We had a 45 minute dive on the SS Rosalie, visibility was 8 meters (yes 8 Meters) plenty of Plumose anemone, and Sagartia Elagans (had to look in the book for that one) baby edible crabs, and plenty of life. We are planning, if the weather looks good then we are going again this weekend, tides should be better so we might have ago at the SS Vera afterwards. If anyone is interested please let me know.

BarZero are celebrating winning 3rd place in the first ever Branch of the Year competition. Arranged by the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC), who are the governing body for scuba diving in the UK, the contest sought to find the club that did the most for its members. BSAC clubs from all over the world were scored based on several factors including the number of dives completed, the amount of training conducted, skills and special interest courses completed and the number of new members that joined.

This success follows several years of effort and investment in the club, such as new sets of scuba equipment and instructor training. The availability of this equipment means that new trainees don't need to buy it all up front, and all our instructors give their time free of charge - which really helps keep costs down. BarZero members were introduced to lots of different aspects of the underwater world during the year: some developed their rescue, lifesaving and first aid skills while others completed courses in such diverse subjects as Underwater Photography, Outboard Engine & Boat Maintenance or Underwater Archaeology. Nine beginners completed their basic diver training (Ocean Diver), with pool sessions conducted at Monks Walk School, Welwyn Garden City to practice skills and procedures. Highlights of last year's diving calendar included WWII wrecks off Dorset, dramatic underwater scenery in Gozo, seals in Northumberland and manatees in Florida in addition to a number of more local sites.

BarZero is already looking ahead to the next diving season, and hoping to improve on 3rd place. A number of trips have already been planned, including an expedition to the Scilly Isles and another Ocean Diver course is scheduled to introduce more first-timers to the scuba diving world. In addition, the weekly try dive sessions remain as popular as ever!
