Oxygen Administration Award

Course Dates: 23rd January 2010

Course Venue: Hitchin or St Albans

Course Cost: £25 or free for members wanting refresher training

Course Aim: To teach the administration of oxygen as a means of increasing the effectiveness of First Aid treatment of diving accidents. It is implicit in this definition that the treatment takes place on the surface, either in a boat or on dry land. There is no question of administering oxygen to a submerged diver.

Minimum Qualification: Ocean Diver +

Qualification Attained: This course concludes with a practical and a theory assessment and on successful completion you will be eligible for a qualification card.

Dive Leader lessons DT2 - 7 can also be signed up on completion of this course.

Boat Handling

Course Dates: 10th - 11th April 2010

Course Venue: Suffolk

Course Cost: £140

Course Aim: The course is designed to give students, with little or no boat handling knowledge or experience, instruction in small boat handling, including techniques relevant to diving, and related safety knowledge.

Minimum Qualification: Open to all

Qualification Attained: Course certification will be issued, but should not be regarded as a certificate of competence.

Dive Planning & Management

Course Dates: 12th - 13th June 2010

Course Venue: Eastern

Course Cost: £95

Course Aim: To teach divers the importance of Dive Planning and Management, and the correct procedures for doing so; and the need for a suitably qualified and experienced person to perform the function. Also,
to give divers practical experience of dive management.

Minimum Qualification: Experienced Sports Divers

Qualification Attained: Course Certification will be issued by BSAC HQ after the event.

Dive Leader modules DT1, DT8, DT12 & DP1 can also be signed up on completion of this course.

First Aid for Divers

Course Dates: 23rd January 2010

Course Venue: St Albans

Course Cost: £40

Course Aim: The course aim is to teach the basics of first aid likely to be needed in the BSAC diving environment, making use of the resources likely to be available at the time including improvisation of dressings and splints using materials and equipment commonly available at the dive site or in a boat. The course focuses on the recognition and treatment of conditions which are not covered in the BSAC Diver Training Programme.

Minimum Qualification: Open to all

Qualification Attained: Qualification card confirming course attendance, supplied by BSAC HQ on payment of fees and confirmation of attendance on the course.

Practical Rescue Management

Course Dates: 26th April & 1st-2nd May

Course Venue: St Albans & Portland

Course Cost: £40

Course Aim: To teach divers how to manage the resources at their disposal in order to make the most effective use
of them in a rescue situation. The course also provides an opportunity for further instruction in personal rescue skills to complement those undertaken during diver training, but the emphasis will be
on the development of rescue management skills.

Minumum Qualification: Sports Diver

Qualification Attained: Course Certification will be issued by BSAC HQ after the event.

Dive Leader Lessons DT9, DT10, DT11 & DO5 can be signed up on completion of this course.

Search and Recovery

Course Dates: 9th - 10th October

Course Venue: Cambridgeshire

Course Cost: TBC

Course Aim: To instruct the correct techniques and procedures involved in Search and Rescue projects and to provide practical experience of underwater search methods and the use of buoyancy for lifting.

Minimum Qualification: Sports Diver

Qualification Attained: Course certification will be issued.

Dive Leader module DO4 can be signed up on completion of this course.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Course Dates: 7th February 2010

Course Venue: St Albans

Course Cost: £30

Course Aim: To train divers and others involved in BSAC diving activities with little or no knowledge and experience of Automated External Defibrillators (AED), in their use during a diving emergency situation according to Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines, and with particular attention to precautions required in the diving environment.

Minimum Qualification: Open to all

Qualification Attained: Course certification will be issued to students who complete lessons 4 and 5 satisfactorily.

BSAC considers that on completion of this course students will remain competent in the skills taught for 12 months.

Chartwork & Position Fixing

Course Dates: 22nd - 23rd May 2010

Course Venue: London

Course Cost: £60

Course Aim: To instruct members in the basic techniques of marine navigation to a level which will help them as active divers in planning and managing dives undertaken by a typical BSAC Branch.

Minimum Qualification: Open to all

Qualification Attained: Course certification will be issued.

NAS and BSAC Wreck Appreciation Course

Course Dates: TBC

Course Venue: TBC

Course Cost: TBC

Course Aim: The BSAC and the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) are combining to do the new Wreck Appreciation Course. This course is great fun and concentrates on wrecks and how to identify important features. The course is primarily designed for divers new to wreck diving, or those who would like to learn more about the wrecks they dive. You do not have to be a member of the Nautical Archaeology Society.

Minimum Qualification: Ocean Diver

Qualification Attained: If you are a member of the NAS or decide to join, then completion of this course will give you six points towards the NAS Part 3 certificate.
